Purpose. Describes the steps for setting up, operating, cleaning and isolating the beam saw, panel saw, CNC machining centre, edge bander, thicknesser, spindle moulder and drill press in the cabinet factory.

1.Authorisation to operate

Only workers whose name appears on the machine authorisation list in the training matrix may operate a machine unsupervised. Apprentices must be signed off by the supervisor for each machine after demonstrated competence. The authorisation list is displayed beside each machine and updated by the Quality and Safety Manager.

2.Pre-start checks

Before starting any machine the operator must complete the pre-start check on the machine card. Check that all guards are fitted and adjusted, the dust extraction gate is open and the extractor is running, the emergency stop is accessible, the blade or cutter is sharp and correctly fitted, and the work area is clear of offcuts. Any fault must be reported and the machine tagged out until repaired.

  • Guards fitted and adjusted to the workpiece
  • Extraction running and gate open
  • Emergency stop tested
  • Tooling secure and correct for the material
  • Push sticks, jigs and fences available

3.Operating

Operators must wear safety glasses, hearing protection and close-fitting clothing with no loose sleeves, jewellery or gloves near rotating cutters. Keep hands outside the marked danger zone and use push sticks and jigs for small or narrow work. Never reach across a running blade or cutter and never leave a running machine unattended. Only one person operates a machine unless the procedure for that machine specifies a second operator.

4.CNC machining centre

The CNC operator must load the program, confirm the tool list against the tooling register and check the vacuum pod or spoilboard layout before starting a cycle. The enclosure and light curtain must be active for every cycle. Tool changes and clearing of jams must only be done with the machine in a safe state and the operator holding the key.

5.Isolation and lockout

For cleaning, blade changes, clearing blockages or maintenance, the machine must be isolated at the main isolator, locked with the operator's personal lock and tagged with a danger tag. Test that the machine will not start before beginning work. Only the person who fitted the lock may remove it.

6.Cleaning and end of shift

At the end of each shift the operator must isolate the machine, remove offcuts and dust with the extraction hose or vacuum, wipe down the table and fences, and record any faults on the plant register. Compressed air must not be used to blow dust off machines or clothing.

7.Records

Pre-start checks are recorded on the machine card and filed monthly by the supervisor. Faults, repairs and services are entered in the plant and machinery register. Any incident or near miss involving a machine must be reported under the incident reporting procedure on the same day.
