Purpose. Sets out Craftline's commitment to a safe workplace in the factory, glass plant, showroom and on customer sites, and the responsibilities of every worker.

1.Purpose and scope

This policy applies to every worker, apprentice, contractor and visitor at any Craftline site or customer site. It states how the business meets its duties under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Victoria) and the harmonised Work Health and Safety laws where crews work interstate. The policy is the top document in the safety management system and every safety procedure sits under it.

2.Commitment

Craftline will provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risks to health, so far as is reasonably practicable. Management will provide the plant, guarding, extraction, personal protective equipment, training and supervision needed to do the work safely. Safety performance will be reviewed at every monthly management meeting and reported to all staff.

  • Eliminate hazards where possible and control the rest through the hierarchy of controls
  • Consult workers on changes to plant, processes and procedures
  • Investigate every incident and near miss to find the cause
  • Provide information, training and supervision in plain language

3.Responsibilities

The General Manager holds overall accountability for health and safety and approves this policy. Supervisors and team leaders must implement the procedures in their area, run toolbox talks, and stop work that is unsafe. Every worker must follow procedures, use the guarding and personal protective equipment provided, report hazards and incidents on the day they occur, and take reasonable care for their own safety and the safety of others.

  • General Manager: resources, policy approval, safety committee sponsor
  • Quality and Safety Manager: system, register, investigations, training records
  • Supervisors: daily implementation, toolbox talks, stop-work authority
  • Workers: follow procedures, report, participate in consultation

4.Key hazards

The principal hazards in the business are static and CNC woodworking machinery, wood dust, manual handling of board, glass and furniture, cuts from glass and blades, hazardous substances including adhesives, isocyanate coatings and solvents, noise, work at height during installation, and vehicle movements in the yard. Each hazard has a risk assessment and a controlling procedure listed in the document register.

5.Consultation

A health and safety committee with elected representatives from each production department meets monthly. Toolbox talks are held every Monday in each department and recorded. Workers must be consulted before new machinery, substances or work methods are introduced.

6.Review

This policy will be reviewed every twelve months, after any notifiable incident, or when legislation changes. The Quality and Safety Manager will present the review to the safety committee and the General Manager will approve any change.
